History We Need to Learn
Southern Black Midwives had better birth outcomes than today's highly trained Ob/gyn's. Here, one such "granny midwife" tells her story in her own words. Margaret Charles Smith of Eutaw, AL did not have "formal" training as a midwife, so much as she had practical lived experience of supporting not only the black women in her rural community, but white women too. This book is a must read for doulas, childbirth educations, new parents, midwives, OB/GYN's, CNM's, labor and delivery nurses, or anyone who works with pregnant people. This is the childbirth education that ought to be taught in schools, that also highlights how white supremacy and racist laws worked to all but stamp out the tradition of folk midwives, namely black granny midwives like Mrs. Smith, all across the South. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
