How Homer accomplishes her goal, endears himself to the surrounding townsfolk, and avoids an arrest for a previous crime, comprises the heart of Lilies of the Field. The film, adapted by James Poe from a novel by William E. Barrett, was later remade for television, and it won Poitier an Academy Award for Best Actor, the first time that award was given to an African-American. Hal Erickson, Rovi

Wonderful movie about faith
This movie is clean and fun. It's so true about the poverty in the life of nuns. As a matter of fact, I work with a group of nuns and they do the same to me: they feed me but they don't pay. It's perfectly OK with me. They give me freshly grown fruits and vegetables. I just want to donate my time and talents. It's a great witness of the faith and trust in God to provide for them. Obviously, God put the man there to help the nuns, albeit reluctantly. In the end, God's will is done and His glory shine in the church built by a non-catholic man and the local people.
