During course at Harvard, an accident destroyed sight in his left eye & subsequent inflammation weakend other eye so he was nearly blind all his life but he still determined upon a literary career & devoted himself to the study of Spanish history. Wrote "History of the Reign of Ferdinand & Isabella the Catholic; History of the Conquest of Mexico; History of the Conquest of Peru and worked on History of the Reign of Philip the Second but did not live to complete this work.
