Sometimes having examined the sources, I have added little touches that belong to the subject, and that seem to me to give interest and colour. I have, of course, been scrupulous not to make any state ment which does not agree with the Author's views. Most of my information is indeed drawn from his very useful books. With his aid I have detected and set right several small errors of detail, and I owe him sincere thanks for the patience and courtesy with which he replied to my not infrequently mistaken objections.
