This old and perhaps rare item, is a simple biography about a little known leader in Mormonism during much of the 19th Century. Many readers may be put off by either the simplicity, some might say naivete of the narrative, or its panegyric nature. However, since it is about the only thing available on this important figure in Mormonism, it is useful, even helpful in many cases. An example of the former issue is the fact that there are no footnotes in the entire volume--a common absence in much of early Mormon literature. One also wishes for more detail or elaboration on many events and issues. An example for me was a desire to have a more detailed account of his service several times as Mission President in England and Europe. What were the main issues he faced, his teachings, his style of leadership? These and a dozen other questions are not answered in the brief surveys of his missionary labors. Though Richards was on the inside of the Church heiarchy for two generations, the author gives little insight into Richard's work in the governing body of Twelve Apostles or the inner workings of that group. It was interesting to learn, however, that he spent much of his adult life, not in Salt Lake City at the center of the Mormon universe, but 60 miles away in Ogden, because he had been sent there by Brigham Young and never released from that assignment. He commuted to the capitol to participate in Church leadership. He had a large influence in that northern community, indeed in the region, as he gave long service as a Probate Judge. His influence was further expanded through service in the Territorial legislature. Indeed, one of the mysteries not solved by the book, was how, given the constraints of travel and communication of the time, he was able to be so deeply involved and productive in these disparate activities. Another tantalizing problem introduced by the book concerned Richards' involvement with Mormon Temple rituals and the genealogical work that supported it. One brief chapter of seven pages is devoted to this subject, however, on page 239 the author says "he devoted a great deal of the best part of his active life to this important labor." Yet about half of the seven pages devoted to this subject are given over to a discussion of the background on Mormon beliefs relative to the temple. In sum, many issues arise in this volume, which are inadequately dealt with, that would prove the catalyst for several studies for advanced degrees. Despite these drawbacks, the book has an uplifting quality to it because Richards was not only a very committed, active and involved man, but he for all we can learn from this biography, he was also a very good, wise, respected and loved man.
