Dr. Dalrymple's key insight is that long-term poverty is caused not by economics but by a dysfunctional set of values.

This is one of the best social commentaries I have ever read. I actually bought this copy to send to friends and in-laws. It's entertaining and terrifying-- truly shows the dangers presented by the welfare state and the dangers of misplaced middle class guilt on the underclass. For the anglophiles among us, beware--- this book will make you weep for the Britain that existed before WWI.

How does socialism create a moral and spiritual poverty? Is it possible that those who have material basic necessities can be more impoverished than those suffering disease, hunger, and cold in third-world countries? Let Theodore Dalrymple's gripping observations open your eyes to the destruction being wrought in inner-city England, and by application, America.

Significant, Important and depressing
Dr. Dahlrymple records his impressions and analyses of life with the underclsass in Londonistan. His observations hold true for the US - perhaps with a small time delay.

Accurate, well written
Nicely done, very accurate. He's been there in the trenches so the insights are real, not from a distant academic.
