Every one who is in the slight est degree conversant with the actual state Of things in Persia now recognises that the num ber and influence Of the Babis in that country is immensely greater than it was fifteen years ago, and the conviction which I heard contin ually expressed this year in Babi circles at Cairo, that in the course Of a very short time their religion would reign paramount in their own country, and break down once and for all the power Of the Shi'ite Muhammadan majlanzds and malla's, is seriously discussed as a possi bility by European diplomatists and consular Officers.
