Hablot Knight Browne [Phiz]; Walter G. Browne. Very Good. A signed, limited edition biography of the life and work of famed Victorian era illustrator Hablot Knight Brown, better known as Phiz. Number eleven of two hundred limited edition copies produced, initialled by the author-David Croal Thomson-to the colophon. The engraved portrait frontispiece of the subject of the work, etched by Charles O. Murray from an oil painting by Phiz's son Walter G. Browne, is signed by both Murray and Walter G. Browne. Illustrated with the aforementioned frontispiece, and thirty-four further plates of Phiz's work. Collated, complete. With numerous clippings related to Phiz's illustrations pasted to the front pastedown and two rear blanks. One advertisement to the rear of the work. Phiz illustrated works from authors including Charles Dickens, Charles Lever, and Harrison Ainsworth. Of the ten books by Dickens which Phiz illustrated, he is most known for David Copperfield, Pickwick, Dombey and Son, Martin Chuzzlewit and Bleak House. Browne made several drawings for Punch in his early days and also towards the end of his life. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail. Rear joint and tail of front joint starting, with boards holding firm. Front hinge starting, board holding firm. One clipping to front pastedown, with numerous clippings pasted to two rear blanks. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, with only the odd spot or area of discolouration. Very Good.
