Die Kenntnis einer die Hohlr???ume des Zentralnervensystems auskleidenden Zt>ll: schicht geht auf Purkinje zur???ck, der 1836 "ein Flimmerepithel im Inneren de; Gehirns" entdeckte (s. Studnicka, 1900). Eine gr??????ere Bedeutung wird dieser Ependy11w: hicht jedoch erst sp???ter beigemessen, als systematische Untersuchungen (Stilling, 1859: u. a. ) an ihr auffallende lokale Unterschiede zeigen. Den ersten Hinweis auf das SCO finden wir bei Stieda (1870): er beschreibt bei M???usen einen an der caudalen Fl???che der Commissura posterior und am Dach des Aquaeductus Syh-ii gelegenen Ependymbereich, der sich durch besonden; hohe Zellen aus- zeichnet. Rabl-R???ckart (1887) stellt bei verschiedenen Amphibien, Reptilien und V???geln ebenfalls eine "Ependymwucherung" nahe der hinteren Commissur fest. Bedeutungsvoll f???r sp???tere Arbeiten ???ber das SCO sind die Untersuchungen ???ber den Bau des Ependyms von Studnicka (1900); der Autor findet eine "knospen- f???rmig verdickte Ependymauskleidung" im Bereich der Commissura posterior und berichtet au???erdem erstmals ???ber Sekretionserscheinungen an verschiedenen Stellen des Ependyms. - Einen wesentlichen Impuls erh???lt die weitere Erfor- schung des SCO durch die Entdeckung des Reissnerschen Fadens (Reissner, 1860, Petromyzon fluviatilis). Sargent (1900) beobachtet die enge Beziehung des rostralen Abschnitts dieser Struktur zum SCO. - Gezielte Untersuchungen des SCO beginnen mit Dendy (1902), der die langgestreckten, cilientragenden Ependymzellen genauer beschreibt.
