The series' real drawing card was its stellar cast of voice actors, portraying the many historical personages with whom Sarah, James, Moses, and Henri came into contact. For example, Ben Franklin was voiced by veteran newscaster Walter Cronkite (who even got to say "That's the way it is" on occasion); Michael Douglas was heard as Patrick Henry; Sylvester Stallone enacted Paul Revere; Dustin Hoffman interpreted notorious turncoat Benedict Arnold; and Arnold Schwarzenegger managed to sneak an "I'll be back" into his characterization of Baron Von Steuben. Originally aired on PBS between 2002 and 2003, Liberty's Kids tells the story of the American Revolution from the perspective of three youths (Sarah, James, and Henri). The chronology of the show is between December 1773 (the Boston Tea Party) and April 1789 (the Inauguration of President George Washington). Episodes tend to fall into three categories: events (the Intolerable Acts, the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere, the Second Continental Congress, etc.), battles (Bunker Hill, Long Island, Saratoga, etc.) and key people (Nathan Hale, Lafayette, Bernardo de Galvez, Benedict Arnold, etc.). Each episode is very accessible and entertaining yet very good on the historical side in terms of information and geography. Teachers of the American Revolution will want to own this DVD set. I have used several episodes in my American history classes and have found them to be an effective teaching tool. In sum, Liberty's Kids is both entertaining and informative. Highly recommended.
