The editor has sought to bring the reader, as far as possible, into personal touch with the great authors - for letters, as James Howell said as long ago as 1645, "may more than history enclose," and tell their story "by a more gentle and familiar way." Too often the works of a distinguished writer create a false impression of his character and personality; but generally speaking, he stands revealed in his letters.
