Good. Frontis, illustrations, xxiii, 248p. Contemporary black 3/4 leather over marbled maroon boards. Five raised bands on backstrip. 19cm. Front cover detached. Corners rubbed. Top edge gilt. Bowed. Two-page Autograph Note, signed ("Dufferin & Ava") tipped in. The note, on both sides of a single sheet, is dated Ap 12, 1889 and addressed to a Mrs. de Salis(? ). Lord Dufferin, then the British Ambassador in Rome, offers to place himself at her disposal to see show her the embassy at "1/2 past one" on the following day but states that he has no power to help her with anything to do with the Pope.
