Letters Home represents Sylvia Plath's correspondence from her time at Smith College in the early fifties, through her meeting with, and subsequent marriage to, the poet Ted Hughes, up to her death in February 1963. The letters are addressed mainly to her mother, with whom she had an extremely close and confiding relationship, but there are also some to her brother Warren and her benefactress Mrs Prouty.Plath's energy, enthusiasm and her passionate tackling of life burst onto these pages, providing us with a vivid and intimate portrait of a woman who has come to be regarded as one of the greatest of twentieth-century poets. In addition to her capacity for domestic and writerly happiness, however, these letters also hint at Plath's potential for deep despair, which reached its crisis when she holed up in a London flat for the terrible winter of 1963.

This book portrays what Sylvia Plath wanted her Mother to see. I do notice that she really hid the deep hurt that she felt when Ted Hughes started an affair and eventually left her. I never really knew how beautiful that Sylvia Plath really was. There are many pictures of her life in this book. I saw the "daughter" , "Sister" , and "Mother" of this incredible woman that was so very sensitive and just seemed to desire love from Ted Hughes. I know that her Father somehow "hurt" her by dying..in her eyes.. but Ted Hughes did the ultimate damage by leaving her there alone with her children and her very lonely mind. I believe that if Sylvia Plath would have just had a man to come into her life and make her feel special she would not have committed suicide. but, who really knows for sure. I think in the end she knew that Ted Hughes would be there for his children more if she was gone. I have read this entire book and then pick it up to read bits and pieces again and again. This is a must have for any Sylvia Plath fan ...excellent read..
