Like Pizzicato Five and Puffy AmiYumi before them, Petty Booka's U.S. debut consists of highlights from the thriving career they enjoy in their native Japan. Since the mid-'90s, Satomi Asano ("Petty") and Miyuki Matsubara ("Booka") have been covering pop, kitsch, and country classics in a lighthearted, often ukulele-led Polynesian style. Let's Talk Dirty in Hawaiian (Weed) collects 17 favorites and throws in two newly recorded gems -- the title track and a Tiki-lounge music take on "These Boots Are Made for Walking." There's a fabulous language barrier-be-damned version of "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini," a faithful rendition of "Tide Is High," and a lovely, pronoun-adjusted reading of the Ramones' "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" that transforms the song into a South Pacific lullaby complete with tasteful Hawaiian guitar and tropical bird sound effects. The tradition-minded "Cowboy Hula," "Sophisticated Hula," and "Chotto Matte Kudasai" are equally engaging. Denizens of America's tiki underground should certainly take note of Let's Talk Dirty in Hawaiian -- it's a great way to grab the cream of Petty Booka's Polynesian output without having to shell out the cash for imports. But Shibuya-kei aficionados should enjoy this album too, as its gleeful mishmash of Western pop with Japanese lyrics and Hawaiian instrumentation is pretty much irresistible. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi
