This remarkable instrument, silvery but with an elusive layer of grit, will give you an idea from brief sampling anywhere as to whether you'll like it or not, but it's perhaps at its best Alessandro Scarlatti's pastoral cantata Su le sponde del Tibro (On the banks of the Tiber, tracks 10-17): it hovers motionlessly on long notes in the arioso movement (track 11) and maintains a rather uncanny steely edge on the high notes.
