Definition 16. A sentence that contains two or more coordinate clauses is called a compound sentence. Rule 8. Separate the clauses of a compound sentence by the semicolon, unless they are very closely connected in thought; in that case use the comma. In analyzing a compound sentence, proceed in this way: I like oranges, but Bessie prefers grapefruit is a compound declarative sentence. I like oranges and Bessie prefers grapefruit are the coordinate clauses connected by but. Then analyze each clause as if it were a simple sentence. EXERCISE Tell which of the following sentences are simple and which are compound. Analyze each: 1. I borrowed Arabian Nights; and Lucy and I read it together. 2. The weather is cold and stormy. 3.
