Pym's an everygreen talent
If you like your characters deftly drawn where layers emerge like the dawn revealing the world, full of tone and flesh; if you like your dialogue witty but real; and if you like plots that you can hear and feel and walk around in, then pick up this gem from Barbara Pym and immerse yourself.
There are no body counts, no colourless characters, and no ex-military protagonists leaping from page to page and from spiralling aircraft to run away train. She doesn't need them, and neither will you.
This is solid thoughtful writing, with a strong narrative and populated by people you know. And as you finish this book, you'll get the feeling someone is winking at you. Enjoy.
