French description: Le nihilisme a d'abord ete la notion centrale d'un diagnostic porte sur l'epoque contemporaine de ceux qui l'ont formule, au XIXe et au XXe siecles; mais en meme temps, il a aussitot designe a la fois une phase recurrente de l'histoire en general et telle periode en particulier, puis une tendance toujours presente dans la culture. La notion appelle donc une approche plurielle qui examine les diverses configurations ou elle apparait pertinente, qu'elle soit au centre des verdicts rendus par tel ou tel courant ou qu'elle soit effectivement requise par l'examen des orientations qu'on observe.
