Les Bienveillantes aka the Kindly Ones or the Eumenides preside over this novel and its adroit reconstruction of the Nazi campaign to exterminate those they believed inferior: Jews, Poles, roma, handicapped persons, usw. The protagonist's seemingly unconscious murder of his mother concretizes the author's notion that the Nazis were living out a perverse version of the Oresteia--minus the Sophoclean transformation of the Furies into the "kindly" executioners of Athenian justice. Somewhat like Ahab's war against nature, the characters in LIttell's novel are doomed to kill mothers and children in a nihilistic effort to impose an entirely unnatural order upon the world. Despite flaws and undeveloped female characters, the novel conveys in acutely painful detail the numbing agony of war on the Eastern front. An important revision, albeit fictional, of the standard accounts, "Les Bienveillantes" deserves its Goncourt Prize and should have enjoyed better reviews in the USA. It's not every day that 894 pages in French will keep me going to the very end. An important, grimly compelling work.
