Judging from the title, you'd expect Legends of Rock: The Southern Experience to be a Southern rock compilation, an assumption that would be supported by the presence of Blackfoot, Black Oak Arkansas, and ex-Marshall Tucker Band member Toy Caldwell. But there are also selections by Californians Canned Heat and rockabilly veterans Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins, who may be Southerners but don't seem to fit into the dominant musical flavor here. In fact, several tracks from this volume are duplicated on the label's Legends of Rock: Rockabilly Superstars; moreover, many of these tunes are rerecordings, not the original, better-known versions.
