But having been relieved, by the settlement of the law, of a portion of this kind of study, I was induced to review the recreations of former years and, on reading these lectures, I deemed them not unworthy of being committed to the press. The facts and principles are not matters of local or temporary interest: if they possess any interest, they possess as much now as they did fourteen years ago; and they will possess as much fourteen years hence as they do now. I need hardly say that lectures delivered in the year do not contain any comments upon acts of Parliament passed in the year 1846.
