Angesichts der st???ndig wachsenden Bedrohung durch moderne Massenvernichtungswaffen stellt sich die Frage nach den Grenzen des wissenschaftlichen Fortschritts und der hemmungslosen Weiterverbreitung zerst???rerischer Waffensysteme. Aus diesem Blickwinkel heraus k???nnte man Brechts Drama als Beispieltext einer verh???ngnisvollen historischen Entwicklung lesen, die im 17. Jahrhundert ihren Anfang nahm und bis heute nichts von ihrer Brisanz verloren hat. Mit einer solchen verengenden Betrachtungsweise w???rde man jedoch der Bedeutungsvielfalt des St???ckes in keiner Weise gerecht werden. Es erscheint sinnvoll, sich zun???chst Brechts Auseinandersetzung mit dem Galilei-Stoff zuzuwenden, um auf diesem Hintergrund die Frage aufzuwerfen, wie er die komplexe Thematik des St???ckes auf die B???hne bringt. F???r die erste Fassung des Galilei-Dramas, die sogenannte "d???nische Fassung", mit dem Titel "Die Erde bewegt sich" (1938/39) spielt die Bedrohung durch den wissenschaftlich-technischen Fortschritt keine entscheidende Rolle. Hier geht es vor allem um das Problem, wie in einer Gesellschaft, deren Verh???ltnisse vom Machtanspruch staatlicher und kirchlicher Obrigkeiten bestimmt werden, der Wahrheit zum Durchbruch verholfen werden kann. Erst als ihm die Gefahren der Kernspaltung durch die Arbeiten des Physikers Otto Hahn zu Bewusstsein gekommen waren (d. h. nach der Fertigstellung der "d???nischen Fassung"), und vor allem nach dem amerikanischen Atombombenabwurf auf die japanischen St???dte Hiroshima und Nagasaki am 6. bzw. 9.
