And now the reaping o'er, the harvest home, The joyful husbandman thankful it is come, So gladly hastes to strip the fruitful plain Of its rich prize, to bear away again. The carters come quite pleasing to their work, To carry cheerfully till eve grows dark. Now the last load, now merry tune the pipe, To celebrate the harvest--rich and ripe: All thankful for the products of the field, Which will to good husbandmen profit yield. The ruddy swains now glow with honest joy, And with the merry nymphs will chastely toy; The gleaners following, with careful eye To pick the scatter'd grain where'er it lie: Now wandering o'er the field with shoulders bent, Upon their humble work so earnestly intent; It is their due, --the work is just and right, The scatter'd ear, it is their perquisite: But when they've well sought all the fields about, Their lowly harvest makes but little out. If husbandmen would seek blessings to their door, They never should forget the gleaning poor; But now and then should scatter o'er the ground Some liberal handfuls; their stores will more abound: Freely let them lease the last remains, God from above will give them greater gains. The harvest now is home: 0 muse so kind Infuse some more lofty thoughts into my mind; And, that my pen attain a theme still higher, Deign to my soul some better style inspire. Let e'en the earthly harvest show our end; "When we our mortal course shall fully spend.
