Decide that you will accept the unlikely situations and unlikely characters in this book. Then enjoy its excellent writing, layers of meaning and symbolism, and oblique views at the truths of human experience. You'll get attached to the narrator and how he develops. This is so good a first novel that the second and third by Bart Yates may not impress you quite as much--but they're good, too. The really great thing is that good writing can come from a maverick in Iowa City. You don't have to live in a dingy apartment in Brooklyn to be a writer.
