As the film begins, Nightengale's truck caravan breaks down and his troupe finds itself stranded in the backwater town of Rustwater, Kansas. With the aid of his assistant Jane (Debra Winger) (who talks to Nightengale through an earpiece, informing him of the physical problems of certain members of his audience), Nightengale puts on a glorious show and rakes in the money. Nightengale sends Jane to seduce Will, but the sheriff succeeds in getting Jane to fall in love with him. This is one of my top-10 movies of all time! The characters are real, the story is believeable. Martin is likeable while playing an unlikeable person. The movie gets deeper the second time you watch it. Each of the characters are changed as the movie progresses and the ending is unexpected and satisfying. My favorite line is when Martin says, "Son, it makes all the difference in the world." And you know without a doubt that is does!
