This motley crowd whose visits you encourage, Your love-affairs, the rumours they give rise to, Had censors far more numerous and harsh Than I could wish. Of course, you well may know Which side I took; how I did all I could To clear you; swore you really meant no harm And said I'd vouch for it your heart was right. But still, you know there are some things in life One can't defend, however much one wants to; And_soI Ioujvdjnylfjwmpelled to grant Your way of living was somewhat against you; That to the world it had an ugly look; That everywhere it makes all sorts of talk, And that your conduct might, if you but chose, Give far less reason for censorious judgment.
