Three major essays by Baruch Halpern, Brian Peckham and Paul E. Dion deal with traumatic changes in Israelite culture, in particular the transition from the traditional culture of Israel in Iron Age IIA (tenth-ninth centuries) to a new, more widely literate culture in the eighth-seventh centuries BCE. The best of these three essays - and also the most difficult - Halpern's essay on the advent of personal moral responsibility is brilliant. Though very heavy (as all of his work is) in archeological detail and textual details which can be difficult to follow for someone not familiar with the many ancient languages of the near east, and without a fairly good grasp of the history of the region, the implications of his argument deserve to be pondered by anyone who is interested in the history of western moral attitudes.
