The Piarist order, in full the Ordo Clericorum Regularium Pauperum Matris Dei Scholarum Piarum, or Order of Poor Clerks Regular of the Mother of God of the Pious Schools, originated in Spain and devoted itself, among other things, to the education of boys of modest background. By the eighteenth century it was well established in Czech lands. The music of various Catholic orders around Europe seem to hold untouched storehouses of music from various eras, and those that emphasized musical education, like the Piarists, make good places to start looking. That seems to have been the idea behind this disc, sponsored partly by the Czech city of Slany to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the Piarist community in that city. The results uncover some significant music of the mid-Baroque by Johann Ferdinand Richter, Johann Caspar Ferdinand Fischer, and several other composers.
