In a postmodern world overrun with conscienceless counterfeit cowboys, Gene Autrey seems increasingly important as someone who played the part on records and across the silver screen without ever compromising anyone's freedom, dignity or livelihood. In a postmodern world overrun with conscienceless counterfeit cowboys, Gene Autrey seems increasingly important as someone who played the part on records and across the silver screen without ever compromising anyone's freedom, dignity or livelihood. Autrey's gentle high-pitched voice, his pleasant predilection for Western-style yodeling, the wistful old-fashioned vocal duets with Jimmy Long and Smiley Burnette, and various charming blends of fiddle, guitar, mandolin, banjo, string bass, squeezebox, clarinet, trumpet and steel guitar make his recordings as irresistibly charismatic as they are dependably reassuring. Released in 1998, The Last Round-Up is Living Era's superbly selected survey containing many of the best recordings Autrey made between October 9, 1933 and December 5, 1947. Although Autrey's Jimmie Rodgers-based persona is the backbone of the collection, there's more stylistic variety across these 25 tracks than one might at first expect. "Down in the Land of Zulu" is a Western swing rhumba jazzed up with clarinet and slapped string bass. The effect brings to mind two of Fats Waller's most infectious topical novelties: "Abdullah" and "Nero." The pleasantly upbeat "Texas Plains" could easily be mistaken for something cooked up by Bill Boyd & His Cowboy Ramblers. Other parallels could be drawn in relation to Lefty Frizzell, Patsy Montana, Roy Acuff, Roy Rogers and Hank Williams. Those who enjoy Autrey's rendition of The Last Round-Up should also investigate Der Alte Cowboy, a recording of the same melody sung in German by the Comedian Harmonists. ~ arwulf arwulf, Rovi
