Comprised of a group of islands in the western Pacific Ocean, Palau includes the militarily strategic island of Peleliu - the sight of three notable Pacific Theater skirmishes during World War II. While these battles would later be eclipsed by more famous clashes at Iwo Jima, Kwajelein and Okinawa, they nevertheless proved pivotal in helping Allied forced maintain the upper hand against the Axis Powers.
