LAS ILUSIONES DEL DOCTOR FAUSTINO como novela tiene varios lunares (una acci???n dislocada, algunas digresiones un tanto premiosas y ciertos episodios melodram???ticos). Art???sticamente es inferior a otras novelas de Valera, como Pepita Jim???nez, Juanita la larga o El Comendador Mendoza; pero en cuanto a tema, no s???lo es una de las obras m???s interesantes de su producci???n, sino acaso tambi???n de toda la literatura espa???ola del siglo diecinueve.
