The material on the historical side is considerable, and is becoming more homogeneous with the progress of archaeological march. On the linguistic side the material is also abundmt, but less definite and serviceable. . The inscription, papyri and other literature, supply no connected chain of evidence. So many dialects are found, so many idioms, and eo many exceptions to anything like a general rule, that the coustruction of a complete grammar and syntax i quite impossible. No doubt more will be whiovcd in this respect when Hittite and other obscure writings have been clearly read and interpreted.
