Werner Busch verfolgt den theoretischen Reflex auf Landschaftsdarstellung von der Antike bis zum Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts: Von Leonardo und Durer zu Poussin und Caspar David Friedrich, von Monet bis zu Cezanne misst der bekannte Kunstwissenschaftler die Theorie an der Landschaftspraxis. Die klassische Landschaft, ausgebildet erst im 17. Jahrhundert, kann ihre Rechtfertigung u.a. aus der antiken literarischen Topik zur Beschreibung klassischer Ortlichkeiten beziehen. Ihre Bilder, die christlich gewendet auch das Mittelalter bestimmten, hatten ein erstaunliches Beharrungsvermogen, demgegenuber der unmittelbare Naturzugriff der Kunstler es schwer hatte, sich durchzusetzen. Erst das 18. Jahrhundert sprengt u.a. aufgrund des Erfahrungsdrucks der Naturwissenschaften die Vorstellungen eines absolut geordneten Kosmos und lost damit auch die Landschaftsoptik ab.
