Rarely, some special measure of beauty captures us, shakes us, and demands our awakening from a darkness of mind. Lady Moses is such a piece of vividness. Upon reading the opening chapter, the taste of phrases such as: "The world is only cold if you forget how to light a fire," and "We made jokes, the way we had learned to do when life sucked so much you wanted to kill something" created a craving for living again, at least for long enough to know that someone else out there has felt that pain of shattering...and made it back out of it again...long enough to re-examine the issue, and to personally come back to try it once again.
When the main character, Jazz, speaks of another character, an African singer who we are to later meet, she says ?she could take your pain and fashion it into her beauty and hand it back to you as a recognizable thing,? I could only think ?Yes, Dr. Roy. You wrote here the exact praise your own fiction deserves.?
Dr. Roy also tantalizes with references to works of visual art and hints at music which one may find themselves researching, in order to be wrapped even more deeply in a world of Lady Moses...harsh, but all the more beautiful in the contrast of light and dark.
