Estas notas aclaran, sobre todo, los principales rasgos de algunos personajes hist???ricos mencionados en el texto que son poco conocidos, o incluso, completamente desconocidos para el p???blico espa???ol del siglo XXI y cuya actuaci???n no puede deducirse de lo escrito en el texto. En 1989, cuando se cumpl???a el 200 aniversario del asalto a la Bastilla, el gobierno republicano franc???s quiso convertir aquella fecha en un acto de exaltaci???n y reafirmaci???n de los valores democr???ticos. Algunos, ya en aquel momento, nos preguntamos "???Qu??? celebraci???n para una masacre? ". Los actos quedaron, en general, muy deslucidos y el entonces presi- dente de la rep???blica, Fran???ois Mitterand, no obtuvo todo el cr???dito que esperaba. Se supo, adem???s, que enviados del gobierno hab???an visitado a profesores y catedr???ticos de los que se sab???a que estaban trabajando en investigaciones que se consideraban contrarias a la "versi???n oficial" sobre la Revoluci???n. Se les inst??? a que no publicaran sus conclusiones a cambio de recibir puestos de prestigio (y poco trabajo) en el ministerio de educaci???n, incluso de sobornos en efectivo. En un caso la casa de un historiador que preparaba el doctorado fue saqueada y el texto elaborado robado poco antes de su exposici???n (Reynald Secher que preparaba su tesis sobre la insurrecci???n de La Vandea). El ciclo que se inici??? con el Juramento del Juego de Pelota y que llev??? a los sucesivos episodios que Pierre Gaxotte trata en esta obra de manera magistral, ha terminado no hace mucho. La Revoluci???n Francesa es, no solamente cosa del pasado, sino que hoy ya puede hablarse de manera completamente libre y esto implica hacerlo de manera cr???tica. De hecho, todo el per???odo que abarca entre aquellos siniestros a???os hasta hace apenas cinco a???os, ha estado marcada por el lema que se hizo c???lebre entonces: " Libertad, igualdad, fraternidad "
