In this whimsical novel, a brother and sister are shipwrecked on an island where words and parts of speech are really alive. I could be wrong, but I think Orsenna is a member of the Academie Francaise. In my opinion only a French person could treat grammar, that bane of middle-school students, with such a gentle and loving touch! :) I wish I could've found a way to incorporate this into my college intro to French courses. I think it merits being read, if possible, in the original French...there's a companion book too, Les Chevaliers du Subjonctif. Both are fairly short.
