Still, there are represented here popular songs, jazzier interpretations of traditional songs, less jazzy forms of traditional songs, cantorial repertoire, and instrumental repertoire. The bigger names involved here include the Andrews Sisters, Tommy Dorsey, and Al Jolson (as well as Fyvush Finkel, now better known for Picket Fences, Paradise Island, and Boston Public). The music is generally enjoyable, more or less (given that Jewish music makes heavy use of minor scales, a more depressing sort of sound tends to emerge). For a basic overview of Jewish music, this might not be too bad of a compilation, though there are most certainly better ones available. The various albums by the Burning Bush Ensemble are probably more coherent at the very least, and there are countless other albums that might represent the traditions in a somewhat more entertaining fashion. ~ Adam Greenberg, Rovi
