English summary: Unlike language acquisition and the ability to communicate, cultural objectives and issues require particular legitimation in language teaching. Especially in times of change, such as during the development of the communicative approach in the 1970s or the implementation of the Reference Frame (REF) in 2001, these issues become of more interest. This is particularly true of English as the most widely used foreign language. This study examines the debate on the cultural content of English teaching in the secondary schools from different perspectives. The development of this area of teaching in the syllabus and in academic debate since 1975 is illustrated by means of a diachronic approach. The key novelty of the study however, lies in the comparison of the countries Germany, France and Sweden. It turns out that alongside common European trends it is very much a country's own tradition in a given discipline and its concept of education which provide the framework for debate. In 2013, this study was awarded the Franz Emanuel Weinert prize from the Munich Centre for Teacher Training at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich for being an outstanding dissertation in the field of educational research.
