Excerpt from Krieg Und Frieden: Erz???hlungen The three stories of the present volume, although widely differing from each other, have one thing in common; that is, while starting from the narrow limits of provincial life, far away from the great political centers where the questions of the times are settled and the destinies of nations and countries decided, their heroes are forcibly torn from their peaceful surroundings and thrown in the very midst of those fierce struggles which, emanating from France, shook the whole of Europe in the Napoleonic wars at the beginning of the nineteenth century, threatened the collapse of the Hapsburg Dynasty during the war of the Hungarian Rebel lion in 1848 - 49, and made united Germany rise in arms in the great franco-german War of 187 0 - 7 1. Hence the title under which the collection is grouped. The interest of the first story, which is characterized by simplicity and clearness of style, seemingly centers in the person of that adventurous runaway boy who, after leaving his quiet home in the Black Forest, becomes a soldier of fortune, selling his body in turns to friend and foe - be they French or British or Italian. But the story is after all not so much a character sketch of its hero as a remark ably entertaining and instructive kaleidoscopic panorama of peoples and places, of countries and customs north and south.
