Abe's discovery of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana brought the concept of ostinato into his musical vocabulary, and the Symphony No. 1 (1957) represented on Naxos' Abe: Symphony No. 1 -- Divertimento -- Sinfonietta demonstrates that by the 1950s he had absorbed some Russian music as well.
