Designing a knitting chart using standard graph paper is overly difficult because knitting stitches are not square. This beautiful notebook for new and expert knitting designers addresses this issue by introducing special charting paper consisting of specifically ratioed rectangles which are just like knitting stitches. A ratio of 4:5 is where 4 stitches are the same length as 5 rows, or 40 stitches equal 50 rows. A ratio of 2:3 is where 2 stitches are the same length as 3 rows, or 20 stitches equal 30 rows. Most knitting uses a 4:5 ratio, but knitting double and knitting with very thick yarn can be closer to the 2:3 ratio. It's best to measure your tension/gauge and calculate accordingly. The first 75 pages of this notebook are 4:5 Ratio, and the last 75 pages are 2:3 ratio (each is labelled at the top of the page for clarity). The 4:5 ratio is for regular yarn and the 2:3 ratio is for thicker yarn or double knitting.
