Adult Rodeo's debut album for Shimmy Disc, The Kissyface, lies somewhere in between alternative country and lo-fi indie pop: most of their songs are played on guitars, cheap-sounding keyboards, and drum machines, but the melodies, harmonies, and rhythms of many of the songs are indisputably country, and occasional banjo work adds a nice touch. Lyrically, however, the group is anything but country, spinning bizarrely humorous stream-of-consciousness narratives that -- combined with the vocalists' obviously affected drawls and the songs' sometimes jerky, Devo-esque rhythms -- sometimes makes the whole thing come off as a little too arch for its own good. Still, Adult Rodeo has a strikingly different sound, and there is plenty of inspired lunacy to make up for the moments that come off as too ironic or cutesy. The Kissyface could perhaps have been improved by cutting some of the less focused material, which makes the band's better songs a bit harder to sort out, but overall, it's an original and promising debut. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi
