The third of four CDs in this series from the European Storyville label (along with a single Sidney Bechet set) continues the complete documentation of Mezz Mezzrow's King Jazz label, a company dedicated to "the real jazz" according to its clarinetist and president; namely ensemble and blues-oriented jams matching the erratic Mezzrow with the great soprano-saxophonist Sidney Bechet. Since it is not programmed in strict chronological order, this reissue has selections from each of the King Jazz sessions including piano solos from Sammy Price (in addition to a Price duet with drummer Sid Catlett), a vocal from Pleasant Joe, jams from an all-star septet with trumpeter Hot Lips Page, lots of performances from the Mezzrow-Bechet quintet and an oddity, a feature on "Caravan" for an unidentified harmonica player. Mezzrow (in segments obviously recorded quite a few years later) introduces some of the selections with an anectode. All in all, this series is quite enjoyable (even if a bit repetitive) and easily recommended to Dixieland and Bechet fans. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
