The French and Spanish lyrics may take most fans of Celtic music by surprise, but that's partly intentional. Unlike most compilations of Celtic music, this one focuses on the Celts of Brittany (a western region of France), Galicia (a northwestern region of Spain), and Wales in addition to the more commonly known Celtic traditions of Ireland and Scotland. Irish music aficionados will recognize bands like Altan and Deanta, not to mention the Canadian art-folkie Loreena McKennitt (whose "Dickens' Dublin" seems like a rather strange choice for this collection). However, few are likely to have heard anything from the Breton pipe band Bagad Kemper or the highly innovative Breton band Barzaz, whose "Koat-houarn ha Fanchig behan" is a winning fusion of computer-age percussion sounds and traditional singing. From Galicia there is the harp-based and almost Andean-sounding "Maneo Da Ulla - Follada de Padrenda" by an ensemble called Milladoiro. The program ends with a heavily synthesized, almost new age setting of a performance by the Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia Pipe Band.
