Then came two years with the South African Special Forces during which he and a small group attempted to assassinate Robert Mugabe and Joshua Nkomo. Six years with the SAS, which included the Falklands conflict, and two tours with the anti-terrorist team in Ulster, were followed by six years in the RUC. At the end McCallion nearly died in a car crash, left the RUC, completed a law degree and in 1995 is studying to become a barrister at the London Bar.
