Starting in 1954, Edward Kienholz worked against the grain of formal abstract art, gradually forsaking painting in favour of assemblage techniques. In these works, Kienholz addressed issues of war, abortion, prostitution, government indifference and human cruelty. The book reproduces a selection of works from intimate collages to life size tableau, made between 1954 and 1994. The accompanying text explores different aspects of Kienholz's career, examining both his solo work and that which he produced with his wife.
