The first two numbers ("San Jacinto Stomp" and "What Ya Want Me to Do") from the late-night concert features the New Black Eagle Band with cornetist Tony Pringle heading the septet. For the remaining five numbers, Valentine takes Pringle's place, putting lots of feeling into his renditions of four Dixieland warhorses, including an eccentric rendition of "Tiger Rag," and his own "Algiers Strut." Pianist Terry Waldo is heard sitting in on two numbers. Valentine (79 at the time) is the main focus throughout, and although his intonation was certainly streaky, his use of space, phrasing, and obvious enthusiasm make this an LP worth picking up by New Orleans revival jazz collectors. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
