Surprisingly for someone who wrote one of the most popular piano concertos in the repertory, Tchaikovsky's two piano sonatas are not terribly common. Surprisingly for someone who wrote one of the most popular piano concertos in the repertory, Tchaikovsky's two piano sonatas are not terribly common. The one with the higher opus number, the Piano Sonata No. 2 in C sharp minor, Op. 80, is actually the earlier work, written in 1865 while Tchaikovsky was still a student at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and not published until after his death. It is a fully characteristic work, though, and probably deserves wider attention. The Scherzo was reworked for the Symphony No. 1 in G minor, Op. 13 ("Winter Dreams"), and the work as a whole shows the composer contending with his various influences within a Schumann-like framework that serves him well. Pianist Vadym Kholodenko catches the balances of the work well without overdoing any single element. More famous is the Grande Sonate in G major, Op. 37, which has a Liszt-like cyclical motif at the beginning.
