Surprisingly for someone who wrote one of the most popular piano concertos in the repertory, Tchaikovsky's two piano sonatas are not terribly common. The one with the higher opus number, the Piano Sonata No. 2 in C sharp minor, Op. 80, is actually the earlier work, written in 1865 while Tchaikovsky was still a student at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and not published until after his death.
