Recorded privately but with the permission of trumpeter Ken Colyer, this excellent live set (released for the first time on this 1994 CD) features the Colyer band shortly before clarinetist Sammy Rimington departed to tour with some top New Orleans veterans in the United States. Colyer is heard throughout in prime form, heading a group that also includes trombonist Geoff Cole, banjoist John Bastable, bassist Bill Cole and drummer Brian Hetherington. Of particular note is the interesting repertoire, which, in addition to the Colyer favorite "There's Yes! Yes! In Your Eyes" (which perfectly fits his band's vintage style), includes several rags ("Hilarity Rag," J. Russell Robinson's "Minstrel Man," "Kinklets," "That Teasin' Rag," "Swipesy Cakewalk" and "Chrysanthemum Rag"), "Tiger Rag" and a closing "Home Sweet Home." The ensemble-oriented music is quite enjoyable, and this set is an excellent example of the music that Ken Colyer loved. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
