Not surprisingly, it produced so much torque that it only needed a 4-speed gearbox. In 2003, as Triumph took the largest capacity prize with the Rocket III, Kawasaki stroked the Vulcan engine by 5 mm to produce the 1552cc VN1600. Just as with the first 750cc Vulcans, the bigger machines remained virtually unchanged throughout the model life. Twin carburettors gave way to a single instrument in 1996 until fuel injection took over in 2000. The body styles were subtly tweaked to produce significantly different models: the Tourer with a screen and panniers, and the Drifter with its styling reminiscent of the Indian V-twins of the 1930s. The Mean Streak, introduced to compete with Harley-Davidson's V-Rod, was a muscle bike with drag-strip styling. The range was discontinued in 2008, to be replaced by the 1700 series. UK vehicle sales = 3,891 plus an unknown number of grey imports.
